| The 20th Century was a period of war and peace, innovation and modernization. The 20th century started off with a terrible war, WWI, and that war completely devastated Europe. The war could have been worse than it actually was, but because of the fact that Lawrence of Arabia talked to the Arabs, he was able to convince them to fight with the Allies. He also promised the Arabs that he would help develop countries in the Middle East for them. This led to conflict when the British helped to start the State of Israel. At the 1972 Munich Massacre, angry PLO members who wanted the promised Palestinian state, captured Israeli athletes and killed them. Then the depression came to Europe, and everything was in chaos. Following the depression, Hitler rose to power which led to WWII, and then the Cold War, and finally in 1991, Germany was reunited and the USSR fell. But during this period of war and choas, there was also a period of modernization and innovation. The Bauhaus movement started in 1919 as a reaction against Impressionist art. More people started to enjoy the arts and the West End in England became a place for not just the aristocrats, but instead for all citizens of Britain. Another great innovation of this century was the creation of the Chunnel, which opened in 1994, and connected Britain to the rest of Europe. The 20th century brought forth many standards and innovations that would have never been created without all of the chaos and innovations during the 20th century. |
